A Profile in Honour of
Eze Iheukwumere Nwakanma
Agribusiness Financier · Banker · Deal Architect
Head, Agribusiness & Non-Oil Export — Union Bank of Nigeria
The Man
Two decades at the money table of Nigerian agriculture — from inside the very banks that fund it.
Mr. Eze Iheukwumere Nwakanma, FNICA, HCIB, is Head of Agribusiness & Non-Oil Export at Union Bank of Nigeria — the executive who leads the desk that finances agricultural enterprise for one of Nigeria's oldest and most trusted banks, founded in 1917.
He is one of the handful of bankers who have stood on both sides of Nigeria's agri-finance system: inside commercial banks structuring the loans, and inside NIRSAL — the federal credit-risk guarantee institution — designing the de-risking machinery that lets those loans happen at all.

What He Teaches
In his September 2026 appearance on "Inside Nigeria's Agribusiness Financing" (Let's Talk Agriculture), he laid out what lenders actually look for — a masterclass in how agribusinesses become bankable:
- Proof of concept & verifiable cash flow — banks lend against evidence the model works, not projections alone.
- Repayment capacity, market access, and crop suitability — alongside seed quality and irrigation.
- Farmer aggregation — grouping producers makes lending viable where single farmers aren't.
- Development finance & credit guarantees — commercial lending alone cannot sustainably finance the sector.

The Record
Beyond Union Bank and NIRSAL, his career runs through Impact Credit Guarantee Ltd (Head of Operations), Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture (Deputy Chief of Party), and development work with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group and the Heinrich Böll Foundation. At NIRSAL he stood in for Managing Director Aliyu Abdulhameed moderating a national panel on climate and agriculture, and was part of the delegation behind the ₦70 billion NIRSAL–Ecobank agriculture financing scheme. He has served as a mentor with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria — a mentor so sought-after his roster is fully booked — and as faculty of the Business of Agric Masterclass.
"This is part of our business-as-usual process — to catalyse finance to fixed agricultural value chains."— Eze Nwakanma, on NIRSAL's credit risk guarantee sustaining 17,000 cocoa farmers
"Under his watch, Union Bank's agro-loan portfolio guaranteed by NIRSAL has maintained a zero-crystallisation rate — with a running ₦1 billion cocoa export facility a strong indicator of sound structuring."— NIRSAL, December 2025
In 2026 he was welcomed as a Strategic Advisor to a sector institution, alongside his Union Bank role — a recognition of his standing across Nigerian agri-finance. His counsel on exports: they are "about quality, not just quantity."

Why He Matters
Few people in Nigeria understand how agricultural projects actually get financed better than Mr. Nwakanma — the risk-sharing structures, the guarantee instruments, the value-chain logic, and the government programmes behind them. His career spans pre-upstream, upstream, midstream and downstream agri-finance, and he now sits at the head of the Union Bank desk where agribusiness deals are made.
- The de-risking insider: he helped run the federal institution (NIRSAL) whose guarantees unlock bank lending to agriculture — he knows what makes an agri project bankable.
- The portfolio: Union Bank's NIRSAL-backed agro-loan book under his desk runs with zero crystallisation — a track record of sound structuring.
- The network: CNBC Africa commentator, CIBN mentor, NESG and international development circles — connected across the whole agri-finance map.
